You may require a wedding band that has brass or a wedding band with Male or Female vocalist or both. You might like a wedding band with 4 members or a wedding band with 10 members if your budget and venue allows for a large wedding band (please note: more band members does not guarantee a better band or a better sound).

According to a weddings online survey the average professional wedding band cost in Ireland is approximately €2200 and the cost of a wedding DJ is approximately €450. Wedding band prices in Ireland will depend on a few factors, the number of band members, where the band is based, if they include a travel fee , Location of the venue and where the band is based will have an affect on the price and if they are in demand.

But with any service the old saying remains true “You get what you pay for” and that is certainly the case for wedding entertainment in Ireland.

If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is. Our advice is research the band you like, have they got good quality videos, real reviews and a great track record?
A Few Good Mentag:afewgoodmenband.com,2005:Post/62284222020-02-26T15:25:08+00:002020-02-26T15:30:33+00:00What to do for Wedding Entertainment
Whether its your own big day coming up, or you’ve been given the overwhelming task of organising a wedding reception in Dublin or Ireland, you’re probably wondering how to choose wedding entertainment. No one wants a boring wedding, and with so many exciting possibilities out there, you’ll want to make it as special as possible to make it a day to remember.

As live wedding entertainment experts with more than 20 years of combined wedding experience across Ireland, we’ve compiled a list of interesting wedding entertainment ideas which are guaranteed to give the happy couple, and your guests, a truly spectacular day, no matter what the scale of the wedding reception.

Customise a Drinks Menu

Be it cocktails, craft beer, or artisan gin, composing your own drinks menu is just as important as choosing your live wedding band – the menu (or playlist) has to reflect the vibe of the wedding.

Custom drinks are a great way to add a bit of personality to one of the main components of your big day. Concoctions inspired by key events in the happy couple’s life, or beers of the world from countries they have visited and had a wonderful time will add that special touch that will bring nothing but joy to the bride and groom.

It’s not all about the alcohol either. If it’s a summer wedding reception you’re organising, a menu of specially selected mocktails would go down a treat. Teamed with upbeat music from your live wedding band, what better way to please all your guests, big and small, than with a summer garden party?

Hire a Photobooth

Take wedding photography a step further – hiring a photobooth injects an instant level of fun to any wedding photograph. The big day is all about creating memories, and what could be more memorable that an album full of photos of you and your guests posing with silly props or having a boogie to the live wedding music?

You could encourage your guests to post their snaps to social media, and even create your own #hashtag, meaning your guests can browse through all of the photobooth snaps and fondly look back on the special day.

Live Wedding Band

It goes without saying, but a wedding needs music. Sure, you could settle for a wedding DJ, but you’ll get that extra level of excitement and personality from an energetic live wedding band.

It can be a bit confusing when thinking about how to choose your wedding band. It will primarily depend on the reception’s theme and the couple’s taste, so hiring a live band that are versatile will be able to ensure that your guests are catered for.

A Few Good Men like to do things differently. Unlike other tired old bands, we offer an exciting mix of modern wedding songs, classic hits and disco anthems. Our live wedding entertainment really allows you to connect with your guests, making the entire venue come alive.

November-December weddings are so exciting, because there’s a beautiful atmosphere of celebration and being off work in the air. The festivities are underway, the food is spectacular, and the drinks are flowing. What’s not to love about winter? This is why we think a winter wedding is perfect – you know your guests will (most likely) not be on holiday, and everyone is in the party spirit. Here’s some ideas straight from our wedding band for your winter wedding in Dublin!

Your winter wedding venue

If winter is destined to be white, picking a scenic wedding venue like a manor house or a castle will not only look stunning in person, but breath-taking in your wedding photos. Wow your guests with this gothic image and host the perfect wedding reception this winter. Think how great your live wedding entertainment will look and sound in such an atmospheric place!

Have fun with the decorations

It’s impossible to deny that Christmas will feature heavily in the hearts and plans of your guests, so have some fun with it! Incorporate holly, pinecones, robins, and red berries into your decorations for a cosy feel. A roaring fire, candles, fake dustings of snow and even a live reindeer will all add so much atmosphere – take it from a Dublin wedding band, we’ve seen a fair few weddings! Even a Christmas tree and fairy lights will ensure the festive spirit is in the air, driving your evening onwards.

Hire a wedding band for live wedding entertainment

Our Dublin wedding band offers a long, long playlist for you to cherry-pick your favourite songs from. Not only do we play Irish wedding songs, but we also play popular Christmas hits live too. We’ll get the party going with modern floor fillers, bring out the nostalgia with classic rock ballads, and have you all rocking around the Christmas tree with festive favourites.

Festive food options

Mulled wine, a meaty main course, lashing of cranberry sauce, and Christmas puddings for dessert... That sounds like one amazing festive feast. Pass round the sherry and use festive finger foods like mince pies and sorbet ‘snow’ for pallet cleansers – there are so many fun ways of jazzing up the wedding menu with Christmas-themed foods.

Our wedding band in Dublin has seen so many exciting weddings, themes, and interpretations on the classic reception, but we always want to see more! We love being involved in your reception as live wedding entertainment, so we’d of course love to take part in your winter wedding. Contact us today or call on 0879741683 to tell us about your upcoming big day.
A Few Good Mentag:afewgoodmenband.com,2005:Post/59500172019-11-05T12:33:16+00:002019-11-05T12:33:16+00:00What kind of music will my Dublin wedding band play?
If you’re concerned that your Dublin wedding band will play stuffy, old, outdated songs at your wedding, then you haven’t experience the musical talents of A Few Good Men wedding band!

Modern Pop and Rock

If you’re more of a pop-rock fan, or even like to dabble in your indie music scene, then you’ll love this part of our wedding band playlist. Happy by Pharrell Williams, Uptown Funk, and Baggy Trousers by the one and only Madness are just a sampling of the pop and rock songs we play that really gets the crowd going. We add our own passion into every performance, bringing classic rock like Blur and Elvis Presley to life.

Timeless Classics

Are you a Tom Jones, Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, or Queen fan? We play all of these classics and more. Proven to be party starters (and party extenders, and party finishers) like Sweet Caroline will help you party the day and night away, especially when performed by our live Dublin wedding band.

First Dance Songs

All of Me by John Legend, Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, and Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra are all beautiful first dance songs our wedding band have performed that have made the magical moment even more sentimental. Sung and performed live, with acoustic versions of popular songs available, you’ll be swaying in time to some iconic love songs that mean the most to you.

Irish Songs

As a Dublin wedding band, we of course perform Irish songs live and with just as much energy as you’d suspect and then some more! Dirty Old Town by the Pogues, Galway Girl by Mundy, and Whiskey in the Jar by Thin Lizzy are sure to make an appearance if you’re up for a good old fashioned dance-off.

Whether indoors or outdoors, trussed up or dressed down, here’s how to throw the best wedding reception courtesy of the Dublin wedding band who have attended too many to count!

Planning the Food

Your wedding reception needs delicious food. A lot of wedding receptions and newly married couples still opt for the traditional 3 course meal with a seating plan, but increasingly the buffet is becoming a popular option. Wedding caterers, just like wedding bands, can get booked up months and sometimes even years in advance, so make sure to organise this in advance!

Cutting the Cake

Make a song and dance about cutting the cake before the actual dancing starts – we think – because you can get some great photos and videos before you relax into the evening knowing that all of your responsibilities are done. Whether you’re dishing out slices for dessert or for your guests to take home, cutting the cake before the dancing and entertainment kicks off leaves your evening free to enjoy.

Hire a Wedding Band

Wedding DJs are okay, sure, but the music isn’t live and happening right in front of you. Your wedding reception will be truly bouncing with a live wedding band that will get the crowd on their feet and engaged the whole night long. We’ll even play your first dance music or father’s dance with his daughter if you see the song you’d like on our set list. A live wedding band just adds so much more fun and liveliness to your evening. Trust us, we’d know!

A Touch of Sparkle

Add a bit of umph to your wedding reception with something truly unique to you: fireworks, sparklers, or something truly unique like a limbo line! It’s your wedding reception, so add some personal flare or inside joke that you and your loved ones can enjoy whilst the rest of your party marvels at the excellence of the evening.

For this reason, you naturally want your day to be memorable just not for you both, but for your guests and loved ones too! You don’t just want a wedding DJ or even worse, just a party playlist, to be the evening’s entertainment. We’re going to tell you all the reasons why you need a Dublin wedding band.

Live Music!

Who doesn’t love live music? A Dublin wedding band is far preferable to a DJ or a playlist because we play every song live, and we have some crowd favourites in our repertoire. Live music will get the crowd going, dancing, and bouncing along to all of your favourite songs, from recent chart-toppers to classic sing-alongs. Enjoy classics such as Call Me Al, lose yourself to Madness’ Baggy Trousers, jive to Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, and sing it loud and proud to Johnny B Goode. Live music is so much more entertaining and electric, your wedding guests won’t be able to resist.

Character and Atmosphere

A live wedding band in Dublin adds so much more atmosphere than a DJ or playlist could ever provide. We get the crowd going and chat to you in between songs, breaking down the barrier between ‘entertainment’ and ‘guest’. Not only do we provide great music, but we’re also a great band of men, meaning we will happily chat and participate in the conjuring of the atmosphere. Recorded songs can seem a little ‘flat’ because you’ve heard them so many times and know them inside out, but live music comes with its own unique sound and tenor. You’ll hear all of your favourite songs in a character and cadence that you’ve never heard them in before, and the atmosphere will feel so much warmer with our live band.

Make Requests

As a professional Dublin wedding band, we of course have a long set list that includes the stereotypical wedding classics and some that you might not expect, but you can also request songs from our list of first dance music. We’ve covered plenty of big hits both modern and classics, so you’re almost guaranteed to see a song that you and your partner can sway to. We also have options to select from for father-daughter dances.

You want the bands appearance to run smoothly without any nasty surprises so you are able to let your hair down and enjoy the entertainment.

Well, there are a few things that you can do that will make a difference. Here are a few ways to ensure your wedding band runs smoothly.

Decide what part of the day the band will arrive

This entirely depends on your location of the wedding, you may have the ability to move guests into another room whilst the band is setting up or you may decide to ask the band to arrive whilst you are at the church.

Set up before your guests arrive

If the space is available, this is probably the best choice if you are unable to move your guests after the meal, although it probably will require an additional fee to compensate the band for a longer day. However with this option, your wedding band in Dublin will arrive well before you and your guest, so they are able to sound check and sort their positioning out.

Arriving after the meal

If the location is intimate, then the dance floor may be used for guests to eat their meals. Moreover, for the band to set up the tables will have to be cleared and the guest will have to move into another room. Therefore, this time of arrival is ideal if you have the option of moving your guest for a small time period. However, it wouldn’t be totally necessary to move the guests, as most wedding bands usually set up with the guests in the room at most venues in Ireland.

When should the band play?

To get the most out of your wedding band, you will want the guests to feel relaxed and ready to party! To enable this to happen you need to pick the perfect time that your band will perform. We suggest that the band’s first performance is from 9.00pm onwards. Before they start playing most bands will be able to provide background music to allow guests to gradually move towards the dance floor and bust some moves.

Looking after the band

The band may have travelled far to get to your wedding and when they arrive they will have no access to food. Therefore, offering the band food and drink is appreciated; this will give them the energy to play the performance of their lives.

If there is an evening buffet available, the band will happily accept this, however a nice cup of tea would do just fine!

End of the show

Once the night has ended and everyone has had an unforgettable night, the band will pack away as quickly as possible. This can take up to an hour so please ensure the venue is informed about this.

You probably have a good idea of the kind of music you’d rather have at your wedding but you also have to consider your guests and all of their different preferences.

While you can’t please everyone, there are quite a few good choices for your wedding music and an equal number of unfortunate ones that you probably want to stay away from.

Choosing a wedding band that can guide you in this treacherous landscape is vital. As we’re able to cover anything from classic to modern pop, we are one of the few Dublin wedding bands that can help you with this.

Make sure you agree on the style

With so many different wedding bands available, you are pretty much spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the right style for you and your wedding. Just make sure you talk to the band extensively and ask for their setlist so that you can be certain your style requirements match.

For instance, we’ll ask the bride and groom to choose up to 20 songs from our extensive setlist and try to incorporate them into the evening as best as we can.

Think of any requests you want to make

Your wedding day is very special and you should be able to make it happen exactly like you want it. The best wedding bands will tell you exactly what they can and can’t play and will also make sure you’re comfortable with the setlist.

Adding to that, don’t think that an all-male wedding band can’t cover a female singer/band or vice versa. We cover Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse, and Dolly Parton just to name a few!

Don’t worry if you aren’t a music aficionado

No wedding band worth their salt will expect you to know a lot of about music. Just focus on whether you like the band’s sound or not. Trust your gut, listen to one of the band’s video showcases, and try to picture them in your own wedding.

That, combined with the band’s setlist, should give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you like their style and if they would be a good fit for your own wedding.

Trust the wedding band you choose

One thing to keep in mind is that when you hire an experienced wedding band like A Few Good Men, their setlist will have been carefully crafted and tested in dozens if not hundreds of weddings.

Having a good conversation with your wedding band is crucial. Let them know a little bit about your guests, for instance, and they’ll be able to recommend songs that will appeal to the possibly diverse audience, particularly those that will cater to every age group.

Lively is always better than not

While a couple of waltzes are perfectly suitable for a wedding, you want your guests to have fun and be energetic on the dance floor, not be contemplative and melancholy.

The easiest way to achieve that is to pick upbeat songs and a wedding band that can truly bring that electric energy to the forefront, making your guests feel comfortable with getting on the dancefloor and staying there throughout the night.

However, let’s not forget that a wedding band sets the tone of your wedding reception. Make the wrong choice and your guests will remain glued to their chairs. Make the right choice and you’ll have everyone on the dancefloor. What we’re saying is that the style of the wedding band you choose is paramount.

Now, let’s be honest. You and your fiancé may have drastically different tastes in music. One of you may favour the power ballads of the 80’s, whereas the other may be more contemporary in your musical taste, intent on finding modern pop wedding bands in Dublin. Surely, your best bet is to find a wedding band that will get everyone on the dancefloor boogieing away and then slowing the beat down for those romantic moments that make a wedding reception.

Now, that aside, there are a handful of attributes that any good wedding band should have – and more importantly, there are certainly circumstances and requests that contemporary and classic wedding bands in Dublin should be able to manage without too much hassle.

New Songs

The music industry is consistently evolving – and with that so too is the soundtrack to all our lives. A good wedding band will be able to belt outtwenty-first century hits just as well as they can play Unchained Melody.

Then there’s the requests. Regardless of the style of the band, a good wedding band in Dublin should be able to deliver on most requests. High-energy and tempo songs aside, a wedding is about creating lifelong memories. You don’t want your wedding reception to be marred by a wedding band unable to play your favourite song. You want to dance to your favourite song with your significant other.

Good wedding bands in Dublin are always adding to their repertoire. This way they can put on a show that everyone will enjoy!

The Sound

Wedding’s can be lively affairs. But, they shouldn’t be deafening. A band that punctures your guest’s ear drums with thunderous rifts will hardly endear themselves to your guests. Sure, a wedding band should offer so much more than merely background music, but a wedding reception isn’t exactly the Sunday night at Glastonbury!

Not only that, many wedding venues have sound restrictions. Wedding bands are obliged to make sure noise levels don’t exceed a specific decibel volume, lest they upset the venue’s neighbours. Whereas this is by no means a cue to reduce the volume to the point that the songs are merely more than whispers, it’s important that a wedding bands knows how to work within the confines of a sound limit without losing any of the thrill of a high-energy live performance.

Dress Code

It’s not uncommon for couples to incorporate a dress code or colour scheme into their wedding. This transcends every element of the wedding – and often goes for the entertainment too. A poorly-dressed band can stick out like a sore thumb!

Now, in addition to performing traditional or modern songs, wedding bands dress sense should complement that of the event – which means that joggers or sweatshirts are a no-go!

Shades are optional, but smart suit jackets, ties and clean shirts are a must. The band is, after all, part of the overall picture of the wedding.

The Sense of Celebration

As we’ve already said, wedding bands in Dublin set the tone of the wedding reception. Guests will follow their lead, hitting the dance floor when the time’s come, and sharing the odd dance or two with members of the wedding party.

Thar joyful sense of celebration should be abundantly clear. No one wants to have a wedding band belt our inappropriate songs or put a damper on guest’s spirits – the band’s there to elevate the occasion!

A good wedding band will personify the very spirit of the occasion. Make everyone feel happy and share in the celebratory occasion.

The most popular bands are in demand for a very good reason and have established their reputation based on a number of things. Obviously, when you are choosing a band to play at your wedding, it goes without saying you want to select the very best. So as well as considering the top tips for choosing a wedding band, you should also think about what sets the best bands apart from those that have very little to offer.

Here at A FEW GOOD MEN wedding band in Dublin, Ireland, we believe you need the following to really make an impact on a couple’s happy day.

Stage presence

Would you be happy for any old performer to take centre stage at your wedding? After months, and sometimes years of planning, you want a band that can hit the ground running when the evening entertainment starts, and wow your guests with their stage presence. As well as having a sharp sense of style, the band you choose needs to have charisma so they will click and connect with you and all of your guests.

Confidence

To have stage presence, the band you hire should have stacks of confidence too. Under no circumstances do you want panic-stricken performers playing for you on the stage, you need musical maestros that are right at the top of their game and oozing with self-belief. It’s easy to spot a band that is brimming with confidence, and their performance will reflect this.

A sense of showmanship

When a band has stage presence and they are full of confidence, it puts you at ease. The combination of authority and self-assurance is a powerful tool and gives a band their sense of showmanship. Guests at your wedding are expecting to be entertained, and they will be if you hire a band that knows how to put on a good show.

The fun factor

Above anything else, the top wedding bands in Ireland know how to introduce the fun factor to your event. As the drinks flow and people get into the party spirit, they want to listen to live music and dance the night away. The best-performing bands know this and they understand this, making sure everyone is having a happy time. Listening to a live wedding band in Ireland is so much fun, and it’s a fantastic way to celebrate your very special day.

A brilliant mix of music

It’s no coincidence the best wedding bands get a brilliant reaction from brides, grooms and guests. Their music is live, the playlist is packed with popular and familiar songs, and each individual track is designed to get people up out of their seats and onto the dance floor. If the band you want to book has a large set list of music, the ideal blend of stage presence and showmanship, are confident and know how to make the evening fun, you are choosing a top band.

Here at A FEW GOOD MEN wedding band, we offer all of the above and so much more for brides and grooms hosting their wedding celebrations in Dublin or any event in Ireland.

As you turn your thoughts to the evening entertainment and try to envisage how events will unfold, you’ll be dreaming that everything is perfect and you and your guests will be having a truly amazing time. Pick the right band and this will happen. If you’re wondering what to look for when you are choosing a wedding band, read the following to get everything right from the start.

Look and Style of The Band

Establishing the style of the band is really important before you book them for your wedding. The look of the band could be critical to the theme of your wedding, so you need to know how they are going to be dressed whilst they perform. Do you really want to have a band playing at your wedding that turns up in jeans and t-shirts, or would you much prefer a smartly dressed group all wearing matching suits? See if the band has a choice of outfits for you to choose. Establish the type of music they play too. If they specialise in one type of music for example, will this be suitable for your wedding or do you want a band that is more versatile?

How Many Gigs Have You Performed At?

Establish how experienced the wedding band is before you book them for your event. The more events the band has played at the more experienced they will be and this will show in their performance. If the band is new to performing at weddings, who’s to say everything will run like clockwork on the day? Novice bands will be nervous but more experienced groups will know what to expect from each wedding, and when they take to the stage, they’ll do so with an air of confidence.

Play List – What’s on it, and Can You Play Special Requests?

Does the band have a set playlist of music that you can peruse so you can choose your favourite songs? A good professional band will have a set list of music for you to choose from. They will be able to suggest a routine based on your requirements and be in the position to offer expert advice on important things such as first dance choices, father and daughter dances, or special set lists of music if you want a particular type of music playing.

Equipment Provided

Does the band provide everything that is needed to set up on the day or will you have to provide anything extra, working in partnership with the venue? It’s always a good idea to have a clear indication of all the equipment the band will be bringing to the event so there are no last minute wobbles. Ask the band to tell you what they’ll provide and have a clear idea of how long it will take them to set up so they can work with your venue coordinator.

What’s included in the Package?

Clearly establish what is included in the package from the start and how many hours the band will be playing for. Do you want a DJ service to be included as part of the package, one that starts as soon as the band stops playing? This can be a popular option for wedding parties and ensures the music keeps on playing right through the night until your wedding evening draws to a close.

Additional Questions You Should Ask

With so much running through your mind it’s easy to overlook the odd detail when you are hiring a live wedding band. That being the case, here are some extra questions you might want to ask the band in question.

Do you have footage of your band in action?

Can you play a song that isn’t on the set list?

How many members are in the band?

Who plays what?

Which one is the lead vocalist?

How do you get the sound level right?

Are you booked for another gig immediately before our wedding?

Can you provide pre-reception music?

What happens if one of you is ill on the day of the wedding?

Are you a member of the Wedding Band Association?

Remember, you can ask as many questions as possible before you book a wedding band so don’t feel awkward. This is the biggest day of your life so feel free to ask away no matter how many queries you want answering.

A number of high profile bands have been trying to cash in on demand by operating a number of bands under the same name showcasing the band with its best musicians taking bookings regardless of the date but then sending out a band of musicians on your night some of which may have never even met before. Unfortunately as a result the quality is greatly reduced and the fact is that you can never get that night and those moments back again. Membership of The Wedding Band Association requires a One Band /One Night policy and this ensures that you get the band you book and secure quality entertainment for your night.

Most Grooms we see are happy to partake in the first dance, but most Irish Grooms bow out after that. One of the more quirky trends emerging in the last few years is for the Groom and his Groomsmen to undertake a surprise dance routine from the Bride. While some stick to classic dance routines like ‘The Macarena’ or ‘Thriller’ others mix it up and produce a medley. One Groom in the US recently did this and the video went viral amassing over 1 million hits on You Tube after it was uploaded. Here we have a look at exactly what he did and hopefully it might inspire some Irish Grooms to do the same.

Who He Is
The Groom Sean Rajaee is an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles and originally from Santa Barbara in California. This allows us to experience all types of weddings, from the traditional, to the alternative. The wedding industry is constantly evolving. Many Irish Brides are following trends that start across the Atlantic in the USA which they see on major wedding blogs and social bookmarking sites like Pinterest and Instagram. Here we profile some of the hottest summer wedding trends this season.

Pretty in Pink Pastel
While pastel colours have always been popular with Summer Brides, pink is now back with a bang. It is very much the blush, nude and pearly pinks this season, not the bright hot pinks. This translates across the colour scheme and can be seen in the Bridesmaids dresses, invitations, floral centre piece, button holes and general décor. It is a return to feminine romance. Gold, peach and mint complement this colour well.

Lush Romantic Flowers
Last season succulents and wildflowers were en vogue and featured in many bridal bouquets and center pieces. A return to romance has now paved the way for pretty Peonies which are in season in May. Gerberas and Zinnia’s are also in season in June and July. The other floral trend is the garland, lavished over doorways and as runners on dinner tables. Fern garlands are very popular and the quirky Bride will use citrus garlands of lemons, limes and oranges on their stems to create a sense of whimsy.

Cakes That Sparkle
The traditional porter cakes covered in white icing have evolved into masterpieces of art. One of the biggest trends is to have a cake dusted with a fine fairy dust of glitter. Gold’s and silvers are very popular. For summer, Brides are choosing light lemon flavours and keeping the chocolate praline for winter weddings. For a while cupcakes were the alternative to cakes, but the emerging trend from the US are donuts in a variety of flavours.

Family Style Food
Dining has become more casual. A ‘family style’ approach of tapas, cheeses, cold meats and antipasto has become popular at many weddings. Food is served on large platters for guests to help themselves. While some Brides opt for this for one course, for example the starter, and then proceed to have the formal main course, others include this style the whole way through the meal. The other foodie trend is for spicy food including adding chilli oil, paprika and mixed spices to foods as Brides get braver in their food choices.

A Few Good Mentag:afewgoodmenband.com,2005:Post/26832912014-03-04T06:28:55+00:002017-01-14T19:18:06+00:00Preparing for Your ‘First Dance’

Get Dance Lessons

The most important thing is to get your groom onside when suggesting that you both attend dance lessons. Whatever you do, don’t let the first time you dance together be in front of everyone at your wedding. Be very sensitive to the fact that for most men, dancing may not be something they want to do in front of everybody and that your groom might be petrified of it on the day. Coach him into getting dance lessons with you to overcome the fear on the day, that way you will know the steps and be a lot more comfortable with each other. Remember that what you have danced to listening to a CD is very different to dancing to your live wedding band, so do keep this in mind. The more you practice, the better you will be.

Choose the Song Wisely

For a classic first dance at your wedding, stick to the tried and tested formula of a nice simple beginning, a peak in the middle and a great end such as the groom dipping the bride. Do not attempt any sort of high impact move that is likely to set you up for failure. This is not the set of ‘Dirty Dancing’, this is your wedding. Unless you and your groom are very comfortable with dancing and can as easily break into a hip hop routine as a foxtrot, stick to a classic waltz tempo in ¾ time as the steps are more manageable.

Work with the Wedding Dress

If your wedding dress is a bustier strapless number, bare this in mind when thinking about any advanced choreography moves as this is the moment when all eyes and flashbulbs are on you. If you have a long train, consider how you are going to hold it when dancing. Can you get the seamstress to add a drawstring so you can gather it up into a romantic bustle, making it easier to dance and keep your feet free? Think about this when buying or having your dress made. Some brides even consider a change of dress for the first dance for the evening part of the reception which can work well here.

Timing the First Dance

Realistically the first dance at your wedding should be about 2 and a half to 3 and a half minutes long. It’s really to give just enough time for everyone to take pictures and comment on how lovely the newlyweds look together. You should advise the rest of the bridal party to join in so it smoothly moves onto the next song and there is no major gap between songs.

It’s really important to choose a wedding band whose musical style both of you like. Look for a band with a large repertoire who are flexible. Just because you and your husband-to-be love obscure indie rock, doesn’t mean your guests will.
Look at a wedding bands set list on their website, review any YouTube videos of them online and ask about specific song choices in advance. If you are organising a 1920’s style wedding, look for jazz options, if it’s a rock-n- roll style theme, think great 70’s rock hits. There is nothing worse than not doing your research and getting something completely different to what you imagined on the day.

The Practicalities
The first thing you should do is contact the bands Booking Co-Ordinator. This person will be able to discuss all the practical details you need to know. For example, if they have your date available, what is the set list, how many in the band, what types of instruments, set up times and on stage time, DJ services, fees and travel expenses. You should have a list of questions prepared, as many Booking Co-ordinator’s will be able to get back to you fairly quickly on these.
It’s best to arrange a payment plan and secure your date with a deposit. You should also give the band your venue details so they can co-ordinate with a hotel staff member.

See Them Live
Once you are happy with the practicalities, ask the Booking Co-Ordinator for any upcoming gigs they are playing near you. It is your wedding, so if you need to travel to see them, you should do so. This is the best way to see them up close and get a feel for them in advance of the wedding. See how they motivate the crowd and interact with everyone. You also need to manage your expectations. If the full band is a 7 piece playing at a gig, but you choose to book just the 4 piece option for your wedding, make sure to take this into account. If you really loved the 7 piece, see if you can stretch your budget to this.

Special Requests
Closer to the wedding date, you should contact the band if you are looking to see if they do any special requests that are not on their set list. This is really only if you have a family member who has a good singing voice and a favourite song which you would like the band to play, or if you have decided on your first dance song.
